How to know your ageing parents need help?

How will you know when your parents need assistance in order to cope with activities of their daily living? One thing for sure is they won't tell you.

The elderly have a strong desire to stay independent and in control of their lives for as long as possible. They do not want to be a burden to their children or close family relatives.

Therefore you will have to monitor their physical and mental abilities, do some research on things you think are not what they would normally do or say.

Here are some of the things you could notice:

  • Noticeable weight loss / low food supply in fridge

  • Decrease in body hygiene

  • Urine odor in house which is a sign of incontinence

  • Blue marks on their bodies, indicating they might have fallen

  • Skin burns which might mean they are struggling to cook on their own

  • Loss of memory

  • Talking alone

  • Lack of drive and motivation

  • Rapid mood swings or changes in behavior

  • Getting lost

  • General difficulty in performing previously familiar tasks

Once you wonder about your parent's condition, it is a good idea to speak to your parent's General Practitioner or Trusted Doctor for his/her insight. You can also book an appointment with one of our professional nurses who can come visit your loved one at home to assess the situation and provide you with her insights and report.
